Future In Our Hands The Gambia (FIOHTG) is a leading registered nongovernmental organisation in The Gambia. During the years, it has intervened in community development, school quality and school infrastructure thanks to national and international partnerships. FIOHTG has recently signed a contract with the World Bank through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to construct ECD classrooms, regular classrooms, toilets, kitchens, staff quarters, school fence and provision of school furniture in NBR, LRR, CRR, and URR for a period of one year six months.
The implementation of the project shall be guided by national, international and organizational laws, rules and regulations. In this regard, each project site and community would require a thorough screening and adherence to the World Bank/World Health Organisation/Ministry of Health of The Republic of The Gambia health standards and regulations towards preventing and managing the spread of Covid-19 and ensuring occupational health and safety on sites and communities. Therefore, Future in Our Hands The Gambia wishes to invite applications from suitably qualified Gambians for the position of Health and Occupational Safety for a period of one year six months which is subjected to renewal at the end of the project. The selected candidate will be based at the organization’s head office in Kotu South but will be regularly going on treks to project sites around the country. The successful candidate will be working with the Construction project managers, site supervisors, contractors, labourers and beneficiaries. He or she will work under the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of FIOHTG.

Job Title: Health and Occupational Safety Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Health and Occupational Safety Officer ensures that health and occupational safety measures are applied to the design and implementation of the project in accordance with laws, regulations, policies, specifications and agreements binding the project and staff. He or she shall be responsible for the identification of potential hazards to project workers, staff, members of the communities; advice and implement preventive and protective measures, including modification, substitution, or elimination of hazardous conditions or substances within sites. To ensure occupational safety and health, the officer shall regularly conduct training for project workers, staff and where necessary members of the community. The job requires frequent visits to sites, inspections and responding to emergencies as may be needed and the production of reports for staff, partners and donors as necessary.
Specific Responsibilities of Health and Occupational Safety Officer
Overall coordination and supervision of health related issues in the World Bank project, COVID 19 and occupational health and safety in particular.
Reporting to M&E Manager of FIOHTG on project health related matters and any other matters of concern
Supervising all project staff and project activities in the field by providing public health expertise, guidance and support in order to strengthen national and community responses to Covid-19. This will include working closely with construction supervisors, contractors, staff of MOBSE and FIOHTG and the local communities.
Ensuring that regulations on occupational health and safety of project staff are adhered to for enhanced service delivery
Representing the organization in both internal and external health related functions
Provide Technical Guidance and oversee the implementation of health and safety regulations and work with the Media on novel corona virus and any other health related issues as shall be directed.
Ensuring internal and external communication through the Country Director on project related matters
Writing and timely submission of consolidated project reports on public health related matters at intervals as may be determined by FIOHTG/MOBSE and World Bank agreements.
Attending and reporting project progress at quarterly SSR meetings on behalf of FIOHTG
Ensuring periodic field visits or attending major field functions
Knowledge building and sharing with regards to management and operations of the project;
Carrying out any other assignment as may be assigned by your supervisor(s).
Requirement/ Qualifications
Higher Diploma in Public Health (BSc is an advantage)
Demonstrated effectiveness in a project management role;
Ability to multitask and deal with stressful situations.
Ability to adapt within the working environment.
Ability to work in a team setting.
Knowledge, understanding and experience in covid 19 including social, economic and gender dimensions is an added advantage.
Fluency in English and at least two local languages
Ability to write clearly and concisely in English
Good knowledge of computer applications in particular – competencies in Word, Excel, Power Point and the internet
Excellent communications and report writing skills in English
Thorough familiarity with principles and current approaches to monitoring and evaluation of health programs and in particular Corona virus using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
A minimum of 2 years job experience for candidates with a higher diploma and 1 year job experience for candidates with a BSc.
